The handwritten quote says ‘Good basic design gives stability even if the piece is very complex and busy.’ The drawing and quote are from years ago, doodled during a class given by one of my Illustration teachers at the Academy of Art.
It’s not always easy to know what good basic design is, especially when you are down in the thick of a project, and many voices are telling you conflicting things, but the advice holds true. If you can still hold onto even a few of the design principles, even if they are cliche, they’ll still help you hold the piece together in a more cohesive whole.
